DEAR EDITOR,
I am aware of four main bridges within the Township on the Essequibo Coast that are currently without rails; quite an unsafe and precarious existence for the numerous drivers and pedestrians, including the elderly and children who would use the bridges daily.
The threat becomes even more realistic during the evening, especially when the fluctuating water, which is often filled with breeding weeds, rises to the level of the bridges. In such cases it is often difficult to decipher the exact width of them, thus leading to vehicular accidents in the past. It was even suggested that the non-existence of such rails may have contributed to the recent death of a resident, who drowned in one of the connecting trenches.
Two of the bridges are situated in Anna Regina; one of which is just next to the car park and the historical ‘high bridge’, while the other is located to the western end of the town leading into the Caricom Rice Mills Factory. The other two are situated in the neighbouring village of Cotton Field, with one of them connecting the main road and the other to the old road, leading to the western end of the village. This bridge had rails, but they have now collapsed. It is perhaps the only bridge on the Essequibo Coast as well, that quickly transforms itself into a pool whenever the rain falls, because of its unevenness and its lack of maintenance.
I am therefore appealing to the relevant authorities to remedy this seemingly unnoticed delusion and minimise the existing danger that these un-railed bridges pose to the general public. It is obvious based on the strategic location of these two villages that the route between Anna Regina and Cotton Field has been the busiest, and therefore every precaution should be taken to ensure that the safety and well- being of each citizen remains a priority.
Historically, these bridges were built over two decades ago, and the thought of having them railed then may have been miniscule. Presently, such consideration should not be the case, since the steep increase in vehicular traffic makes these bridges prone to tragedies that instead can be averted.
