Nineteen years ago, the Mayor’s Cup Football Championships joined an illustrious group of tournaments on the local sports calendar and since then, has earned its place as one of the eagerly awaited yearly events.
Organisers are now putting the modalities in place for the 20th edition of the tournament, one month of solid action, from Saturday March 29-Sunday April 27 next, when 29 of the nation’s best teams from several regions battle for supremacy.
Power team, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United is the defending champions and will start the tournament as the firm favourites. However, Fruta Conquerors FC has carted off the goods on four occasions, the most by any team and would be keen to repeat those performances.
Several other teams would have won earlier editions of the tournament and would be staking a claim including Pele, Sunburst Camptown, Victoria Kings and Western Tigers. Otherwise, nine other Georgetown teams will be battling for glory.
Teams will also be drawn from the West Coast Demerara (7), East Coast Demerara (4), East Bank Demerara (2) and Berbice (4). The organiser is former national coach, Lennox Arthur, and he has intimated that, unlike previous editions, matches will be played at rural venues including Berbice, West Coast Demerara and the East Coast Demerara.
Meanwhile, Mr. Arthur has assured that the winner will receive a healthy cheque, the same as the second to fourth place finishers. However, he said that he is appealing to members of the corporate community to render the usual support in order to retain the rich vein of rivalry synonymous with the championships.
He has already met with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) which has agreed in principal on the tournament dates.
