Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Deborah Backer, has resigned as a member of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR)
Backer who has been ailing in recent months tendered her resignation letter yesterday to the Leader of her party, Brigadier (rtd). David Granger, who also heads the coalition, A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), and Speaker of the House, Raphael Trotman.
Another APNU frontbencher Joseph Harmon, last evening confirmed the resignation. Backer is currently overseas receiving treatment.
Harmon said that Backer is “one fierce politician” who has served her position exceedingly well. He wished the former APNU member a “speedy recovery during such an unfortunate period of her life.”
Harmon said that deliberations are still ongoing over Backer’s replacement.
