Suriname has restated its commitment to “quiet diplomacy” with Guyana over the disputed New River Triangle area.
According to President Desi Bouterse, in a report yesterday in Suriname’s online Waterkant online website, since news that Guyana was interested in activities in the area, his Government has been busy.
The Head of State himself had spoken with President Donald Ramotar on this issue. Also, the Guyanese Ambassador to Suriname was “summoned” to a meeting, the report said.
That neighbouring country has also sent a protest note to Government and “warned” against economic activities in Tigri (New River Triangle).
“It is thanks to a series of diplomatic actions that took place behind the scenes, that Guyana has decided to stay away from the disputed territory of Suriname…,” said Bouterse during a press conference.
“Suriname maintains the indivisibility of the territory. On the other hand, it has not chosen violence,” the report said,
Bouterse does not see military action as a solution to the decades-old conflict.
Muri Brasil Ventures Incorporated announced a few weeks ago that it made a decision to no longer pursue its exploration activities under the Permission for Geographical and Geophysical Surveys (PGGS) granted by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
This was after a debate over the survey in the public domain.
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn had confirmed that his Ministry denied permission to the company for the construction of an airstrip. The PGGS was for two million acres of land. From time to time, the Government of Suriname has made claims to New River triangle, an area of about 6000 square miles (about 15,600 square kilometers) of Guyana’s territory located on the south-eastern corner of the country. Suriname has also claimed the entire Corentyne River as its territory, and this itself has caused some controversy.
Suriname itself had ejected an oil exploration ship hired by Guyana from conducting work in what it said was its waters. However, a UN tribunal later made a ruling on the boundaries.
Guyana and Suriname in recent years have been increasing ties. A ferry service is in place with a vibrant cross border trade.
Recently, it was confirmed that Suriname and China will fund a bridge across the Corentyne River to Guyana. A significant number of Guyanese are also living in that neighbouring country.
