Matthias asked to resign
There seems to be a serious crisis brewing among the administrators of local football as a letter leaked to the media indicates.
Kaieteur Sport received a letter sent by Guyana Football Federation Vice President Ivan Persaud dated February 2, 2014 to President Christopher Matthias and copied to General Secretary Noel Adonis, Persaud called on Matthias to resign from his post citing serious discrepancies in his stewardship of the organisation.
Persaud opened the missive by stating; “Further to my letter dated January 28, 2014, to which I am still awaiting a response, I write once again as a matter of principle and to provide added information which I pray will cause you to do the right thing and set Guyana’s Football free of tyranny and dictatorship.”
Citing the GFF’s president’s “unprofessional behaviour and lack of respect for fellow executives and members of the football fraternity”, Persaud accused Matthias of misleading them and the general public at a press conference on January 27, 2014. “I am therefore asking you to put away your pride and ego and resign from the office of President of the Guyana Football Federation with immediate effect,” the Vice President wrote.
Further making his case Persaud wrote; “Mr President I am fully aware of the fact that the Georgetown Football Association as of today (February 2, 2014) did not have any approval in writing or signed any contract for the hosting of their GFA/Banks Beer tournament and as such they too should have been banned and suspended at the illegal Extraordinary Congress which you held unconstitutionally. The Guyana Football Fraternity would be happy to know when a similar ban will be extended to the Georgetown Football Association and its Executives.”
It further continued, “Sir you lied to this nation when you left Guyana to attend a FIFA meeting in Zurich on September 2, 2013 and never did so and reported that you did. Please Sir, leave the office of the President of the GFF now or face the consequences.”
Kaieteur Sport has been reliably informed that Matthias was not in possession of a Schengen Visa, the required document to travel to Europe, hence him being denied permission to travel there in the United States.
This latest chapter comes on the heels of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) executives being banned for going ahead with their January 1 finals in contravention to the GFF ruling.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport sought a response from Matthias via telephone on the accusations made by Persaud and he responded by saying that, “We are fully aware of Persaud and his accomplices’ missive and the GFF will respond very shortly.”
