The 23rd edition of the R&R International 40-mile Cycle Road Race is set for this Sunday on the West Demerara.
With the season now warming up, spectators are in for another exciting event. Orville Hinds of the United Bike Shop won last Sunday’s NSC sponsored season opening 40-miler and he will start as favourite in this week’s showdown.
The fact that most of the big guns will be in their saddles again makes the contest even more interesting so it’ll be anybody’s guess who will cross the finish line as the winner. Robin Persaud, Geron and Marlon Williams, Paul De Nobrega, Albert Philander and Raynauth Jeffrey to name a few will all be in contention.
Early bragging rights and setting a platform for the rest of the season will be central for the cyclists individually and collectively from a club standpoint. Consistent performances will also be important when it comes to selection to national teams.
With Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) boss Cheryl Thompson already informing that this year will see the re-introduction of Inter Club races, an exciting season looms.
The youth pool of riders makes for stimulating reading also, the like of Stephano Husbands, Akeem Arthur, Michael Anthony, Shaquelle Agard, Alanzo Ambrose, Romelo Crawford and Raul Leal, who has returned to full fitness after an accident that had him incapacitated for months.
Leal has made his presence felt ever since his return, defeating some of his more senior colleagues to date. He finished third overall on Sunday last and was the top junior. The anticipated duels with the likes of Anthony, Arthur and company can only benefit the sport.
The veteran category is also one to watch with the most successful rider over the past two years, Junior Niles aiming to maintain that status. He will be challenged by Robin Persaud and Jude Bentley among others.
On Sunday, the first six finishers overall will be rewarded as will the first two juniors, veterans females and first mountain bike competitor. Six prime prizes are also up for grabs.
The starting point is Scoonorde just off the Demerara Harbour Bridge at 08:00hrs proceeding to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the starting point for the finish.
Managing Director of R&R International and former cyclist Jacob Rambarran is expected to be on hand to assist with the presentation of prizes.
Last year’s winner was Alonzo Greaves who covered the distance in One Hour 41 Minutes 58 Seconds. Raul Leal took the junior category, Stephen Fernandes (veteran) and Naiomi Singh the female class.
