While there have been reports of insufficient accommodation at the Male Surgical Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), adequate steps are being taken by the hospital management to deal with the space issue.
Reports reaching this newspaper, suggest that a shortage of beds has resulted in the transfer of some patients to other public health facilities, while some persons are being treated and allegedly ‘prematurely’ discharged.
“The patients getting discharge quick, quick cause them ain’t got beds for put them. Even people with gunshot wound getting send home once they looking li’l good although dem in pain.”
One patient Khemraj Ramjohn was transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, yesterday, immediately after undergoing surgery at GPHC.
The man’s wife, Nadine Ramjohn, explained that her husband underwent an appendectomy at GPHC.
“Me husband been in pain. We come here Friday and we had fuh wait long long…After me husband done surgery dem had he long in the recovery room cause dem ain’t had space in the ward.”
The woman said that the hospital administration subsequently informed her that her husband would be transferred to WDRH.
“Me nah know why but dem tell meh that; me na know if is because me does live over de West Bank,” Ramjohn, a resident of Canal Number Two, West Demerara, said.
Public Relations Officer of GPHC, Mitzy Campbell, explained that the hospital has been implementing adequate measures to deal with the issue of accommodation.
Campbell said, “GPHC usually collaborates with other state owned health institutions to continue care of patients in these instances.
Some may be transferred to facilities close to their homes but GPHC still networks with the hospital to monitor the recovery process of the patients and this does not affect the quality of care.”
