A female rank of the Guyana Defence Force was brought before the courts charged with killing a 55-year-old woman whose body was reportedly found in her backyard.
Abiola Jacobs, 22, was yesterday morning whisked before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to be indicted five days after the alleged murder.
When Jacobs arrived at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court in her black skirt and lime green flowered shirt, she was soon crowded by family members who, with media personnel, followed her all the way to the courtroom.
Like a soldier, Jacobs stood in the prisoners’ docks with her hands held tightly behind her back and faced the presiding Magistrate, sparing the media one teary-eyed glance.
“Abiola Jacobs, it is alleged that on January 31, at Agricola in the Georgetown Magisterial District, in the county of Demerara, in the State of Guyana you murdered Donna Taylor,” the Magistrate read.
Soon after Jacobs was instructed that she was not required to plead as the charge was deemed indictable.
The Prosecution in being represented by Inspector Michael Grant, who informed the court that investigations are not yet complete.
Jacobs’ court hearing concluded in about three minutes when the Magistrate informed her that she was remanded and is expected to be in court on February 26 for report and fixtures. At that hearing, a date will be set for the commencement of her Preliminary Inquiry (PI).
Taylor’s bound body was found at the back of her Lot 16-17 Agricola home shortly before midnight last Friday. She was found with her hands bound behind her back, a slit throat and a piece of cloth wrapped around her neck.
The mother of four was said to have been attacked in her bed around 23:00 hrs on Friday and slain after she was dragged to her backyard.
The other occupant of the rented upper flat, Samantha Sabat, was subsequently found lying unconscious in the front yard.
The British-based Sabat was a guest of the Taylors. She reportedly escaped by removing the panes from her bedroom window and jumping to the ground from the top flat of the two-storey structure.
She was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for a suspected fractured arm and lacerations to her face and other parts of her body.
Ms. Sabat came to Guyana some three weeks ago for her father’s funeral.
Although Taylor’s home was ransacked and some valuables reportedly stolen, Kaieteur News learnt that a rivalry between two young women known to Mrs. Taylor was the motive for the killing.
A neighbour and the victim’s son found her body, with hands bound behind her back, in ther backyard. A post mortem later conducted showed that she suffered blunt trauma to the head, as well as injuries to the neck and other parts of the body. Death was due to shock and haemorrhage.
The army rank, who was the paramour of one of Taylor’s sons, was apprehended after Sabat, who survived the attack, fingered her as one of the individuals who forced their way into the residence and launched an attack on them.
