Former national basketball player, national coach and coach of the late Trevor Rose’s last club, Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters, Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan yesterday chided clubs for their poor turnout at the funeral service of Rose.
Stakeholders from a wide cross-section of society, including the corporate community and sports enthusiasts paid tribute to the late Rose at a Funeral Service at the Olivet Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Durban Backlands on Monday.
Rose, who was gunned down more than a week ago outside the Eccles Community on the East Bank Demerara carriageway, served the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) as President during 2008-2011 and surprisingly, some basketball players and clubs were visibly absent from the moving Funeral Service.
Those present included Ravens with its coach, Darcel Harris, representatives from Pepsi Sonics, Panthers and Plaisance Guardians. Newly elected President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, Nigel Hinds was also present. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport was also not visibly represented at the service to pay homage to the deceased.
The United States of America-based Cadogan believes that the low-key turnout from one of Rose’s main constituent, basketball was nothing short of disrespectful to the contributions of Rose. Below is Cadogan’s full letter sent to Kaieteur Sport.
“It is very disturbing to know that the clubs did not mobilise themselves to attend Trevor Rose’s funeral in the traditional way that we do when one of us passes on. After all he had done for the game in Georgetown, the least clubs could have done is to show up in a formal way with their members in uniform and show support to his family in time of mourning.
As the then Secretary of GABA under Rose leadership, this young man went beyond the call of duty to make sure that the game was played. He literally breathed life into the game during his tenure as President. Just a few examples of what he did include bringing new fans to the game, adding lights at Burnham Basketball Court after decades in darkness, most tournaments played over the two years in office; the most lucrative tournaments; the formation of new clubs; the return of clubs that were dissolved; countless meetings with the Director of Sports, Neil Kumar to reduce the rent for the Sports Hall and the use of his personal financial resources to make sure basketball was played in the Sports Hall.
It is a shame that some clubs and players could not find the time to pay their respect to him and his family, more so his children. It would have been an indication of their father’s involvement in basketball; I urge the players to ask themselves what they can do for the game not what the game can do for them.
Do not always place the development of the sport on administrators; many times administrators and promoters have to spend lots of money on advertisements etc. to ensure that players have an audience to showcase their talents. Many of the players don’t have a fan base and don’t promote the game by encouraging family and friends to come out and support the game.
At least they could have shown gratitude to someone who went the extra mile to make them play the game they love.”
