Dear Editor,
I have read with some interest an article in the Guyana Times, January 20, 2014 captioned “Policeman goes berserk at NA hospital”. It was accompanied by some photographs of what was the damaged portion of the hospital.
The burning question that I have to ask is —is there a special law for policemen and one that is separate and exclusive to civilians?
We have nurses who were simply earning a living as employees at the New Amsterdam hospital and a doctor. They were petrified by the behaviour of the police and prison officers. It is not clear what precipitated the damage to property of the Hospital but is that what we should expect from our uniformed upholders of the law?
They appeared to be under the influence of more than alcohol and were suffering from lacerations at the time. They chased nurses and a doctor around the compound and even assaulted a doctor. One may even question the security for both employees and patients at that institution.
Funny, isn’t it that the matter has been so hush hush! The public needs to be informed about the sanctions, if any, against these policemen.
I have been pacing the halls of our various courts since that eventful morning hoping to catch a glimpse of the perpetrators as they would have been brought to face the long arm of the law. That was a despicable behaviour. It was a display of blatant disregard for law and order and at a public hospital at that.
Minister Rohee, the immovable Minister, have you ordered that any of these hoodlums be charged? Is there an investigation into that vandalism? Why has no one been charged?
Then there is the issue of causing death by dangerous driving that took place well over six months ago. An inspector of police was driving his car and struck down a man at the Fyrish road on the Corentyne.
The policeman has not been charged as yet. In a similar situation a very prominent doctor caused the death of an individual by accident and this doctor was charged a few days later.
Let us not forget the infamous robbery at No 48, on the Corentyne which allegedly involved policemen. It resulted in “harry wrong to Harry right” being transferred to various locations. But has anyone been charged? If it is known that policemen were involved in that robbery (I am not saying that policemen were involved) why has no one been charged?
Then not so long ago two very dedicated traffic policemen in New Amsterdam were ordered remanded and they blatantly refused to attend their remand, which I understand is a special holding place at Eve Leary.
They were doing brisk business on the roads in Berbice in full view of the presiding Magistrate who ordered them remanded. What disrespect and disregard for the law that they have sworn to uphold. Of course they were questioned on their next court date by the said magistrate and both these officers had no excuse. How could they offer a reason for their refusal to obey an order of a court? The matter ended on that note.
Is there a special law for policemen and separate one for civilians? What is the Minister doing to save face in all of the above? Is there anyone in authority in this Government who can offer any explanation for the abuse of law and order by police in this country?
And we are not even going to look at the dark tinted cars that they own
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Charrandass Persaud
