Feb 05, 2014 Letters
Dear Editor,
It is with profound dismay that I read in the Kaieteur News of February, 02, 2014 a letter from one Intikhab Sankar which amounted to no more that an outrageous attempt to discredit our former Test cricketer and national captain, Roger Harper, who was part of the illustrious West Indies team that dominated world cricket for fifteen (15) years.
To set the record straight, I am fully aware that Intikhab Sankar is an associate of Anand Sanasie.
The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) is the best run, most efficient and productive Association in Guyana. The GCA continues to be well sponsored, stages many cricket development programmes and competitions and its cricketers form the majority of those selected to the various national teams.
Roger Harper, as the President of the GCA, has been doing an excellent job and has brought to bear his vast cricketing and organizational skills in the interest of promoting and developing cricket in Georgetown.
I am not sure if Intikhab Sankar is from a cricketing background or is prepared to assist in the development of cricket. If so, I wish to direct him to cricket on the West Demerara, the area from where his close friend Anand Sanasie hails.
Sanasie was up to recently, President of the West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA). He is presently a Vice-President of that Association.
Intikab Sankar’s time and effort would therefore be better spent in establishing why cricket in his area, West Demerara, is in such a shambolic state. No cricket is being played there and the entire West Demerara has not produced a single player for the senior national team for over fifteen (15) years.
A few years ago, Anand Sanasie unceremoniously removed Mr. Harnarine Tiwari from the Presidency of the WDCA by holding elections after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) was adjourned and the majority of the official delegates had left. During this time, the presidency of the WDCA changed from Sanasie to Shradananda then back to Sanasie and then to Lalta Digamber, a close friend of Sanasie.
The present situation in West Demerara is that nine of the fourteen clubs that form the WDCA have been sidelined by Sanasie, Digamber and their cohorts and only their five ‘friendly’ clubs participated in the past two elections.
This resulted in the nine clubs forming their own Association to provide for the cricket-starved youngsters on the West Demerara. This move was met with threats to our players by members of the WDCA and has severely impeded the progress of cricket on West Demerara.
The situation is alarming and no one seems to want to confront Anand Sanasie who is also on the Demerara Cricket Board, the Guyana Cricket Board and the West Indies Cricket Board where he uses his influence to stifle our efforts.
We therefore welcome the initiative and are happy to learn that the Cricket Administrative Bill 2012, which was tabled in Parliament, will restore order and establish legality to our shattered cricket structure. We sincerely hope that all parties in Parliament will overcome their differences and pass the Bill without further delay as the misfits in control of our cricket continue the irreparable erosion of our great national game.
The nine clubs mentioned above are firmly in support of the Bill.
