Bail was yesterday set to the tune of $100,000 for two city businessmen who were brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to be charged for allegedly wounding a middle-aged man.
Middle Street Car Wash owner Vickram Sanchand, 29, and Desmond Singh, the part owner of Fix-Up Music were not required to plead to the indictable unlawful wounding charge which was read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The charge which they jointly faced alleged that on February 1, at Third Street, La Penitence, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded Maurice Teixeira.
The Prosecution’s case was presented by Inspector Michael Grant who said that on that day, Singh, an Orange Walk Bourda resident, accused Teixeira of slapping him and the two business owners joined and thrashed the man, thereby inflicting injuries about his body.
Grant offered objections to bail citing the injuries that the victim sustained and added that the two men are known to the victim and as such they would likely tamper with him. He also indicated to the court that a medical is available for its perusal.
However, representing Sanchand was Attorney at Law Oswell Legall who made an application for reasonable bail stating that his client has no priors. He added that Teixeira slapped his client, who according to him, is not seriously injured since he was standing in the court and not hospitalised.
Meanwhile, Singh addressed the court stating that he previously faced a noise nuisance charge to which he had pleaded guilty.
The objections of the Prosecution were overruled and the men were granted bail. They are expected to appear in court on February 26 for a report where the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) is expected to be applied, thereby allowing them to plead to the charge.
