Dear Editor,
Over the years members of the Guyana Police Force came in for praise and criticism for their actions on various issues. However, over the past several months, the police have been making the news for all the wrong reasons.
We heard of the case of a Rupununi woman being beaten by a policeman known by his infamous alias “Shuggah” last year , the Colwyn Harding case, the ranks who assaulted a TV host at Sparendaam, the drunk rank who drove his car into a canal in Sophia ,damaging a fence in the process, the ranks who allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old and now we have an admirable public figure in the name of Mr Rawlston Adams who was verbally assaulted by one of these “powerful” men in uniform.
One therefore begs the following questions. Are police ranks a law onto themselves? Are there rules which apply to these men and women of the law? ARE THERE WEEKLY OR EVEN DAILY meetings between rank and superior? Are these ranks, especially the uncouth hooligans , given reinforced messages as regards dealing with the public?
Do the commanders of the various divisions meet with ranks (not their immediate superiors) and scold them whenever media reports highlight their bad public image? Is the GPF ashamed of the image it is portraying these days?
One wonders what is going through the minds of those other police officers who have worked tirelessly over the years to upkeep the image of the force.
I commend those officers for their contributions to law enforcement.
I wish however, that the Administration of the force wield out those characters who are tarnishing its image. After all, a police officer’s role is to serve and protect.
Yours sincerely,
Paulette Harvey
