After a period of more than a decade, international amateur boxing returns to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) February 14-16 next and boxing buffs yearning for the return of the slugfests of the late seventies/early eighties are assured of similar action that pits the skill of local pugilists against their counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago,
Jamaica and St Lucia.
The St Lucian team consists of the best in the Island in Light/Welterweight Lyndell ‘The Russian’ Marcellin, Welterweight Ron Bastien and Middleweight Arthur Langillier. Their local equals are Bert Braithwaite, Eon Bancroft and Ron Smith (Welterweights), Trevon King and Dennis Thomas (Middleweight) and from all appearance the local squad is intent on reclaiming lost glory.
St Lucia’s Head Coach is Conrad Fredericks while second Vice President and PRO of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association (SLABA), Brian Mc Donald, is the Team Manager; President of the SLABA, David ‘Shakes’ Christopher will head that delegation.
The other boxers selected to represent Guyana are Michael April, Stephon Nedd and Junior Henry (52kgs), Delon Charles (56kgs), Imran Khan and Clairmonte Gibson (60kgs) while the two females are Dwon Thompson and Theresa London, both tipping the scales at 75kgs. Trinidad’s representatives are female, Chimbre Taylor (75kgs), Akmal Strode (52kgs), Christian McDonald (56kgs), Michael Alexander (60kgs), Jean Paul Cooper (64kgs), Akiel Outram (69kgs) and Aaron Prince (75kgs). The Jamaicans are Patrick Sahadeo (60kgs), Anthony Clarke (64kgs), Kestna Davis (69kgs) and Michael Gardner (75kgs).
The local team is engaged in roadwork exercises at the National Park at 05:00hrs and then returns for gym sessions at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) at 16:00hrs daily. The squad is going through its drills under the keen scrutiny of Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake, Wensel Thomas and Cuban Coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldon, back in Guyana after returning to his homeland for the Christmas holidays.
Last Monday afternoon these Coaches combined their efforts and pushed the local boxers to the limit and they (coaches) are confident that their charges will shine in the imminent championships.
The boxers are scheduled to be encamped this morning and last Monday afternoon engaged in several rounds of shadow boxing and bag work. They were also pushed to the limit during three hours of arduous roadwork on the inner circuit of the National Park, yesterday morning as the coaches seek to attain optimum fitness levels.
The forum will also allow the Presidents of the various associations to convene in a meeting scheduled for the 15th where they will discuss strategies toward the sport’s development in the region while comparing notes on organizational techniques among other issues.
