Bail was yesterday set to the tune of $100,000 for a 35-year-old taxi driver who was yesterday brought before the courts for allegedly stealing a rented Toyota Allion which was parked at the former Georgetown Magistrates’ Court location some two years ago.
It was the first court hearing for Lennox Jones Jnr. at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was arraigned on a larceny charge and later granted bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The charge detailed that on November 21, 2011 at Middle Street, Georgetown he stole one Toyota Allion valued at $2.7M, property of Esther Wright.
Inspector Michael Grant, who prosecuted, said that Wright owns the car (HB9280) but rented it to Police Constable Semple for two days.
About 09:30 hours on November 21,2011, Semple reportedly parked and secured the car at Middle Street, near the former location of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
However, when he returned for the car about 12:30 hours, he discovered it was missing and subsequently reported the matter.
Grant said that four days ago (January 31), Lennox was spotted driving the car at Port Kaituma with registration number PMM5738. As a result, he was arrested.
Subsequent investigations led to the charge being instituted against him.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer, Mark Waldron who stated that his client was in Port Kaituma at the time of the alleged theft. He indicated that his client bought the car from someone else.
During the hearing it was confirmed by the Prosecutor that the accused was indeed in Port Kaituma.
In response, the Chief Magistrate granted bail and set his next court date to February 21 for report and fixtures.
