The Guyana Police Force will formally launch its Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit training programme on Thursday.
Kaieteur News understands that for the past two weeks the specialist trainers from the Emergence Group (TEG) of the United States of America have been working with the ranks selected to make up the unit.
They were described as “three men with lots of experience.”
Forty ranks, including four officers have been shortlisted for the training and according to a top official of the Force; the number would be narrowed down slightly.
The ranks have already gone through some rigid physical training as well as remedial weapons exercises to test their suitability for the more intense training under the specialist trainers from overseas.
While senior officials of the Force continue to be tightlipped about the composition of the initial batch of ranks for the SWAT unit, a reliable source has indicated that some of them have had previous specialist training.
“They couldn’t just pick any ‘green’ man,” the source said.
The Organizational Needs Assessment for the Unit has already been completed.
According to the training contractors, Guyana should have a fully functional SWAT unit by mid-year.
