Watched by a handful of spectators at the Queens Park Oval yesterday, Jamaica creamed Ireland by six wickets in the NAGICO Super50 cricket contest to move to nine points from two matches in zone ‘A’ of the eight-team tournament.
Ireland wasted a half-century opening stand between William Porterfield and Niall O’Brian and lost their last seven wickets for 61 runs to be bundled out for 161 all out in 46.1 overs with pacers Andre Russell (3-19), Jerome Taylor (3-34) and off-spinner Tamar Lambert (2-27) doing the damage.
Jamaica in reply reached 166-4 off 29 overs with 20-year-old left-hander John Campbell leading the run chase with an accomplished 71 from 80 balls with seven fours and a six in only his second game at this level. He got support from Tamar Lambert (27) as Jamaica collected a bonus point for reaching the total before 40 overs.
Ireland, playing in their inaugural Regional tournament, won the toss and elected to bat on a spongy pitch with a tinge of green and a very fast outfield.
Porterfield and Niall O’Brian gave the Irish a firm foundation by putting together 54 in 15 overs before Dave Bernard made the break-through when he induced Porterfield (25) to edge a catch to the Keeper.
Jamaica, without West Indies left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell, who pulled out of the team yesterday due to injury and was replaced by Jerome Taylor, struck 20 runs later.
Alex Cusack joined O’Brian and together they took their team to 78 when O’Brian was LBW to the burly Lambert for a patient 35. The 100 was posted in the 27th over as Cusack and Gary Wilson took their time in compiling runs, but Wilson (10) was soon removed by Lambert.
Andrew Poynter was caught behind for a duck off Andre Russell and Ireland, set to oppose the West Indies in two t20s and an ODI in Jamaica later this month, slumped to 109-4.
It was 110-5 when Russell got rid of Cusack for 30 in the same over and none of the other batsmen offered any prolonged resistance as the Irish lost their last five wickets for 25 runs.
Phil Simmons, who celebrated his 200th game as Ireland Coach, must have been dismayed with the batting of his side.
Jamaica began shakily when Horace Miller (18) played around a straight ball and was struck plumb to Tim Murtagh at 20-1 and Nkrumah Bonner (22) was sent packing by Max Sorensen 32 runs later.
Lambert and Campbell, who batted brilliantly for his half-century, playing several audacious shots off both back and front foot, then fell with victory within touching distance.
Russell then saw his team to victory with consecutive sixes to finish on 12 as Jamaica won with 21 overs to spare and book the first semi final spot.
The Guyana Malta Supreme face the Windward Islands today in the next match at the same venue in another Day/Night clash.
