A 35-year-old security personnel attached to Bhena’s Footwear and Kaieteur News was shot in the left shoulder at around 05:00 hrs early yesterday morning by two bandits in Middle Road, La Penitence while taking a worker home.
The injured man is Omar Bynoe of Agricola. He was admitted in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Police in a statement said that Bynoe was in a car at Middle Road when he was confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. During the altercation, the security guard was shot and injured while his attackers escaped.
Bynoe said that he had just reached in front of his colleague’s yard when he noticed two men heading in his direction, after exiting a cross street.
“When I see them, I told her to stay in the car and let them pass. When they reached like 25 to 30 feet behind, I turned and I was speaking to her (colleague). While talking, I felt somebody on my right and when I looked I saw this guy pointing a gun at me,” the injured man recalled.
He said that from the way the youth was holding the gun, he noticed that the bandit was nervous. “His hand was trembling but I realized that he was serious because his weapon was already cranked and his hand was on the trigger so I didn’t want to take any chances.”
The attack appears to be an attempted carjacking, since the bandits then ordered Bynoe to exit his car.
According to Bynoe, while he was about to open his car door, the bandit opened fire, injuring him and shattering his windscreen in the process.
“As soon as I was about to open the door, the man opened fire and I (still) opened the door and when they saw my gun, they run. I discharged a few rounds in their direction and I notice one of them stumble so I guess he was struck,” Bynoe said.
Police are still to arrest any suspects in connection with the attacks.
