A unique blend of gospel music contributed to an atmosphere of praise and worship, last Saturday, as patrons flocked the Providence National Stadium, for Gospel Festival 2014.
Those in attendance at the concert, headlined by Grammy Award-winning American Christian music artist Israel Houghton and his band New Breed, were also entertained by a combination of local and regional gospel acts.
The crowd sang, danced, wept and lifted their voices in adulation as each artist brought to the stage their individual style of praising God.
“This is that time of the year when we come together to specifically thank God for all his goodness, blessings and mercies that he has showered us with, and thank him for his continued mercy and goodness towards us as a people,” one patron noted
Patrons were both entertained and inspired by dancehall/reggae type renditions, such as “His Love is Amazing,” vocalized by Guyana’s David Yasin (Solid Youth) and “Giving up is not an option” by Barbados’s Hoszia Hinds.
Local highlights included a duet, “Without You,” by Miriam Corlette Williams and her teenage son, Jeremiah, and the locally produced solo “What a Restoration,” sung by Eon Greaves.
Other performers included Cherlyn Malloney, Trenacia Esseboom, and the singing quartet, Circle of Love.
However, before the show could go any further a young couple was engaged. The surprise marriage proposal brought a brief but pleasant intermission to the show.
The next act was Jamaican artiste and Minister of the Gospel, Junior Tucker. He urged the gathering to usher in the presence of God through worship as he called on participants to lift Guyana, “through sheer prayers.”
Tucker’s piece prepared the worshippers for the next level, Israel and his band. The band motivated the crowd to a high point in praise.
During the performance, Houghton called the patrons to be spiritually united for the building up of the nation.
“Anybody and everybody should worship regardless… it is what we were created to do.”
Even after the band had retired, the crowd was still on the tarmac, many with hands lifted up and tears streaming down their faces.
Last Saturday’s event is the third consecutive gospel music show to be promoted by local entertainment company, Inspire Inc.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Yog Mahadeo described it as “a phenomenal success”
“It keeps getting better every year, all we wanted was to inspire… when I looked into the crowd and saw thousands of people gathered in one place, some with hands lifted up and some in tears…I think is truly phenomenal.”
Questioned about his vision and faith to bring gospel entertainment to Guyana, Mahadeo said “I believe that although there might be different denominations and religious beliefs we have one Creator, who deserves the glory.”
Mahadeo promises that Inspire Inc will continue to promote events that will cultivate to an environment of unity and fellowship in Guyana.
The theme of this year’s event is peace, love and unity through gospel.
Last year, American superstar and 10-time Grammy award winner “Cece Winans” performed at the Fulfillment gospel concert.
