…‘Taxi driver on $600,000 bail
The school girl, who was last Wednesday struck down and killed by a speeding, hire car driver on the No 71 Public Road, not far from her home, died from a fractured skull. That was the report from a post mortem examination conducted on the body of seven year- old Felesha Persaud of No.71 Village, Corentyne, Berbice and a student of the No.70 Primary School.
In the meanwhile, the driver of the car, Nyron Yacoob, 32, of Lot 55, No 67 Village Corentyne, Berbice on Friday appeared before Magistrate Rabindranuth Singh in the Springlands Magistrate’s court on the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was granted bail in the sum of $600,000 and has to return to court on Wednesday 26th February.
According to information, at about 15:00hrs, Persaud was on her way home when she was struck down by the motor car HC 2010 owned and driven by Yacoob. The driver reportedly stated that the girl ran across the road and was struck down.
She was picked up and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where she died while receiving medical attention.
There have been four road deaths in Berbice for this year, in comparison to one for the corresponding period last year.
Speaking to the media last Wednesday Officer in-Charge of Traffic ‘B’ Division, Superintendent Calvin Brutus said all of the accidents have been caused by speeding and carelessness. This he said is very disturbing.
Of the four killed, two were pedestrians, one was a pedal cyclist and the other, a motor cyclist. Two of those killed were young children.
Commenting on Persaud’s death Brutus noted, “something must be wrong with these drivers… the fact that it occurred 300-yards away from the pedestrian crossing and not far from a school, shows that the drivers are unconcerned, careless and are travelling at a fast rate…come on, it is a school area and he should be driving below the speed limit because there are small children on the road at that time.”
