A number of medical personnel numbering 30, inclusive of doctors and nurses drawn from all of the hospitals in Berbice were finally trained and prepared to function in the multimillion dollar Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which was installed and formally commissioned since May of 2013 at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The four days of training were conducted by Dr. Precious Sonia Jensen, a paediatrician of Nationwide Children Hospital in the United States and nurse Sarah Foster, and was made possible through the efforts of the Ministry of Health and the Guyana Help the Kids, (GHTK) organisation.
Speaking at the conclusion of the training programme which was held at the New Amsterdam hospital, Paediatrician Dr. Precious Sonia Jensen stated that the main objective of the training programme was to reduce infant mortality in Guyana. And one way is by implementing sustainable changes through education and technology. She said that based on her overall assessment, the persons trained are now equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and expertise to fully execute their duties. She posited that she has extreme confidence that those trained will be able to take care of the operations of the NICU. The project is a joint venture between the Government of Guyana and Canada-based Guyanese paediatrician Dr. Narendra Singh who initiated the NICU program in Guyana.
Also speaking at the ceremony was Medical Superintendent attached to the New Amsterdam Hospital Dr. Vishyala Sharma and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital Alan Johnson. They both expressed their gratitude to the facilitators for taking time to train the staff and gave the assurance that everything taught will be put into full use. Arjune Harinarain is the doctor in charge of the unit.
The facility is fully functional and the first baby was admitted there last Tuesday.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), part of the Government’s vision to have an expansion of health care throughout Guyana, was formally commissioned in May of 2013 however, due to the necessity of training needed it remained non functional.
