BCB hosts annual New GPC Tribute to Retired Cricketers Programme
Six outstanding retired cricketers from the Ancient County of Berbice with over 100 years of combined experience were honoured by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) under their annual New GPC Inc. Tribute to Retired Cricketers Programme.
Honoured were George Paddy, Desmond Fraser, Jaikarran Balchand, Jude Ramkissoon, Hemant Jagdeo and Mahadeo Hatchmanen. The ceremony was held at the St. Francis Community Developers head office and formed part of the BCB Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
BCB Special Events Committee Chairman, Hilbert Foster in remarks said that the Board strongly believes in saluting all heroes in Berbice cricket.

This is the main reason why every year the BCB hosts programmes to honour administrators, umpires, players, coaches and even retired players. Foster praised the retired cricketers for the role they played in laying the foundation for the current generation to benefit.
He also expressed gratitude to the management of New GPC Inc. for their continued sponsorship of the programme and the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club for providing additional gifts for the awardees.
BCB President and First VP, Keith Foster and Anil Beharry both encouraged the awardees to share their vast experiences with the current generation of players. The BCB President noted that his administration intends to make sure that every hero is recognized and honoured as it was very important to let people know that their contributions are appreciated.
Beharry said that the Ancient County views each of the awardees as a role model who should be emulated.
Jude Ramkissoon was the Captain of the Sisters Cricket Club and an all-rounder; Hemant Jagdeo represented Upper Corentyne and in 1984 represented Berbice at the Inter County level; Mahadeo Hatchmanen played for the Chesney Cricket Club in the 1980’s as an all-rounder while Desmond Fraser was a fast bowling all-rounder with the Vikings Cricket Club and the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club in the 1990’s; George Paddy was a senior member of the then GUYWA Cricket Team and ended his career in 1995 as Captain of the RHTY&SC Second Division side.
Eighty-four-year-old Jaikarran Balchan who played cricket for the West Berbice in the 1950’s and rubbed shoulders with West Indies greats, the likes of Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon and Rohan Kanhai were well received by the capacity audience.
Under the Tribute to Retired Cricketers Programme, the BCB has to date honoured close to forty heroes.
