Accompanied by an attorney, the man who allegedly gunned down Special Constable Quincy Wright turned himself in to police at around 14:30 hrs yesterday.
Police sources said that 21-year-old Block ‘E’ Sophia resident, Steve Bacchus, surrendered to ranks at the Sparendaam Station. He was accompanied by a female attorney, and was subsequently taken to the Brickdam Station for further questioning.
Special Constable Wright, who was stationed at the Mounted Branch, was shot dead last week Friday during a confrontation with another man at an Arapaima Street, Guyhoc Park residence.
Police had received reports that the 26-year-old Wright was shot with a .38 revolver that bandits had stolen from a security guard the day before in Sophia. The slain cop is survived by two daughters, aged four and one year old.
Police subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Bacchus in connection with Wright’s murder.
A woman who claimed to have witnessed the shooting said that Wright and the alleged shooter were visiting two women who live at the house where the shooting occurred. The eyewitness said that Wright came up the stairs and the suspect arrived shortly after. It is alleged that on arriving, the alleged shooter went to the top of the stairs and looked at Wright.
According to the eyewitness, she heard Wright say, “that is how you does peep in people face?” and the suspect reportedly replied: “You know me? You better deh pun you heights.”
The eyewitness alleged that the suspect looked into Wright’s face again and said “oh, you is a police.”
She recalled that the men moved to the bottom of the stairs, but the argument continued.
According to the woman, she was attempting to pacify the two men when the suspect shot Wright in the chest.
The eyewitness said that after Wright collapsed, she fled the scene, while the gunman stood over the fallen policeman for a moment before escaping via a bridge leading to Sophia.
Wright was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
