The Linden Hospital Complex has been described as the “best run” health institution in the Country with the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) next in line, according to the Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran.
The Minister made this statement yesterday at Square of the Revolution while handing over several ambulances worth almost $60M to hospitals across the country in an effort to strengthen the ambulance service.
Those who attended the ceremony, which was followed by a mini health fair, were the GPHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan; Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, Leslie Cadogan; Minister within the Local Government Ministry, Norman Whittaker; Dr. Zulfikar Bux, the head of GPHC emergency unit and Ramsaran.
“We have decided that we are going to strengthen the ambulance service. A few weeks ago we dispatched a second hand ambulance to Kwakwani. It was repaired significantly and which had been re-equipped and ready for the road,” the Minister explained.
The GPHC, which Ramsaran said has a “lot of work to do” because of the frequent “overburden”, received two new ambulances while the Charity Hospital got one.
“The Leonora Hospital will get one, Fort Wellington Hospital will get one too, Port Mourant Hospital will get another one and we adding another ambulance at the Linden Hospital,” Ramsaran said.
The Minister added, “We have seven new ambulances which is the first set of more ambulances to come. The rest will be delivered to other areas of service. Our records show that new ambulances suffer their first accidents within three weeks, that is why we are expecting drivers of a certain quality to be recruited.”
He said that the health sector is looking for drivers and not pilots. “We don’t want to fly low. Putting on the siren and flashlight does not give the drivers the right to endanger the lives of other road users and the nurse and the patient who would have been on the ambulance.”
Minister Whittaker, who is responsible for the health sector in the regions, said that he sees the handing over of vehicles worth $60M as an investment that is intended to improve the quality of services that is being delivered.
He added that he will be meeting with the Regional Executive Officers within a few days.
The use and care of the ambulances will factor very high on his agenda.
Khan said that 19 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) will conclude their training today and they will be rolling out with the ambulances to collect patients very soon.
