The Annual Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) Busta 50 overs Festival is set to commence on February 7 with four matches. The tournament was scheduled to be played in 2013, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
Wakenaam will play Bartica at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground, Leguan will take on East Bank Essequibo at Enterprise, South Essequibo will challenge Central Essequibo at Imam Bacchus ground and Affiance and Pomeroon will clash with North Essequibo at Anna Regina Community Centre ground in the first round.
The victorious teams will then compete in the semi-finals the following day before the top two battle in the final which is set for February 9. The winning and runner up sides will receive cash prizes and trophies while the best batsman, bowler and man-of-the-match in the final will also be rewarded.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment, president of the ECB Fizul Bacchus said that the board will organize more cricket at all levels in 2014. “Our main aim is to improve the game in the area, we won the U-17 inter county tournament last year which is a plus for us and we would like to continue in the same vein at the other levels which we know will not come easily”, added Bacchus.
The president indicated that Essequibo is not short of talent, but they will need the support of the business community to lift the level of the game there. “We have to play more cricket especially the longer version of the game in order to improve and this is one of the main items on our agenda for 2014 and we will need the support from the business sector”, he said.
The Guyana Beverage Company is one of the main sponsors of cricket in the county and Bacchus expressed gratitude to the Managing Director Robert Selman and his staff for their support over the years.
