Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Jeffers who hails from Good Hope on the Essequibo Coast, said that he is happy to get involved in the sport adding that France motivated him to do so. He stated that after losing his left leg due to an accident, he wants to show the public the importance of sports. “Sports can play a significant role in one’s life”, he added. Jeffers, whose only event so far is a 13 miles walk in 2008, will make his debut in the marathon when he journey to the twin island republic. He indicated that said his main objective is to participate in the Boston Marathon adding that he now trains twice per day. He explained that he is need of a prosthetic leg and will be presented with one by the Guyana Friends Association in Boston Massachusetts which is headed by Gus Corbin and Francis Quamina Farrier as long as he completes the event.
Antoo indicated that his preparation for the Marathon is going well and his main aim is to support the differently abled people. “I want the differently abled to understand that they can still achieve their goals in life so hopefully can motivate others by taking part in the Marathon”, he said.
Meanwhile, France stated that he wants to become the world’s oldest amputee to take part in a marathon; the feat will be achieved if he does so in the Boston event. He said that while they do not get paid for these events they are concerned about the youths. “We are concerned about the society and want to help make people lives more comfortable”, he said.
The trios have embarked on several fund raising ventures to make their participation in the Boston Marathon possible. They need G$1M and have so far managed $648,000. Their fund raising drive continues this weekend at Springlands, Port Mourant and Canje Bridge in Berbice.
France would like to thank all those who have assisted so far including Pooran Brothers, Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Nigel’s Supermarket, Ray’s Auto Sale, Ramchand Auto Sale and who supported them while raising funds at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
