New York (New York Daily News) – The Bronx district attorney is investigating a female security guard’s claim that she was sexually assaulted by a UPS manager in his office, the Daily News has learned.
The attack occurred in August and the alleged assailant was fired shortly after it was reported to the NYPD, according to a lawsuit filed by the victim.
Mohanie Sukhu, 41, a widow and mother of two, claims that she was summoned to UPS loss Prevention Manager James Jiggets’ office at the delivery company’s customer service center on Brush Avenue in the Bronx. When she arrived, she found Jiggets standing with his pants pulled down, according to the suit.
He allegedly forced her to perform oral sex on him and then attempted to remove her pants to have sex with her, the suit says.
Sukhu, a native of Guyana, agreed to allow The News to publish her name and image. It is the newspaper’s policy not to identify victims of sex crimes without their permission.
“She is new to the country, does not read or write very well, and she wants other women in her position not to fear speaking out,” said the woman’s lawyer, Andrew Laufer.
A spokesman for Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson confirmed that the incident was under investigation and declined further comment.
Jiggets claimed the sex was consensual, and Sukhu has received “harassing” calls from him since the incident, Laufer said.
“My client never had any type of relationship with him. We’re a little frustrated by the pace of the investigation,” Laufer said.
Sukhu works for a private security company that is sub-contracted by UPS to provide guards at its facilities. The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified monetary damages, accuses UPS and Jiggets of creating a hostile work environment.
“I deny these allegations, I have no comment and I’m looking forward to being vindicated in court, not the press,” Jiggets said Thursday.
UPS spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg refused to confirm whether Jiggets was fired.
“We took the allegations seriously, it has been thoroughly investigated and we took action,” Rosenberg said. “We want to have a work environment free of harassment or any activity that is inappropriate.”
