In response to an article captioned “How ICC has failed Guyana’s Cricket ” written by Colin Benjamin and published in yesterday’s Kaieteur News, Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Anand Sanasie highlighted several inaccuracies by Benjamin.
“It would have been professional to seek my comments and or answers before publishing such an article,” the GCB Executive opined.
Sanasie who is also a Director on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) claimed that he was not surprised the Article was published on the same day the Cricket Bill was again tabled in parliament– Thursday, 23rd January 2013.
According to Sanasie Mr. Chetram Singh never resigned from the Guyana Cricket Board as the Article stated. In fact the long serving GCB head did not seek re-election at the AGM of July 10, 2011.
An upset Sanasie said that contrary to Benjamin’s story the Demerara Cricket Board and the Essequibo Cricket Board attended the GCB’s AGM of January 27, 2013. A quorum was present in keeping with the Constitution of the GCB. The Minutes and Video Recordings are available for perusal.
He further explained that in Pakistan, the Cricket Board President was reinstated by an order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and not by any Government, and this was against its wishes.
“I cannot dictate what the ICC should do in Sri Lanka or in any of its member states but I can say the WICB President and CEO visited Guyana twice to mediate in the disputes here.
“On one such occasion Caricom brokered an agreement and Mr. Frank Anthony and Attorney General Anil Nandalall said they had to discuss it with “higher authority”; they are still discussing two years after.
Sanasie feels that had the Government of Guyana disbanded the Guyana Football Federation, or tried to do so, FIFA would have not entered Guyana but from afar would have instituted a ban for many years.
Sanasie, whom Benjamin deemed the wrong person to assist the Leeward Islands Cricket Association to solve their dispute, countered, “I am honoured to have been involved in the resolution of the impasse in the Leewards Islands.
“It took two short meetings with eight smart, honourable representatives of their membership who had cricket and their countries at heart, to resolve the issues.
“They had elections, a new President and CEO and an office provided by the Antiguan Government, with more support on the way. The Antiguan government willingly provided assistance without hijacking the Board”
He said being honoured by the GCB for hard work along with Terry Holder and Chetram Singh is something he would cherish.
“Maybe Mr. Colin Benjamin can question the Committee that made such a recommendation. Most good journalists also receive accolades from time to time” Sanasie concluded.
Editor’s note: Benjamin’s article was on file and was never intended for publication. Its publication was inadvertent.
