Dear Editor,
There has been much talk and little action when it comes to managing the garbage situation in the little community of Bartica.
Our major dump site is located in an area of the community called Byderabo/Over-the-Creek. This is the area that the local authorities have selected to dump all the garbage that is collected from around the community. However, when the sanitary service in Bartica known as “General Sanitation” collects and dumps the garbage at the dump site, there is no further action to properly get rid of it.
The dump site has become so saturated that on a regular basis one can see the garbage truck(General Sanitation) dumping the garbage on the road side. As a result, cows, donkeys etc are harboured and cause traffic jams on the road. Not only is this area a public roadway and the only road to reach into Byderabo, but people also reside in this area. Children as well as working people traverse this road to go to school\work on a daily basis enduring the putrid stench of this garbage dump.
Is this healthy for the community as a whole? More so the residents of Byderabo. As the saying goes “he who feels it knows it.”
Every year Bartica hosts one of the biggest events held in the country; The Bartica Regatta, which as we know comprises various events that attract a lot of tourists from all parts of the world. Is this the way the community plans on boosting tourism in this region and the country as a whole with a garbage-filled environment, hence a garbage-filled country?
As a concerned citizen I am kindly asking for the local authorities to look into this matter. To find a healthy, satisfying and permanent solution to this problem that has existed in this community for too long. With that I leave you with these words; “the health of one’s community should be of prime concern.”
