A motion was moved on Sunday at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was held at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Hall, Thomas Lands, for the ratification of three new athletic clubs.
Two motions were moved during the AGM; the first one being for any Guyanese, who is elected to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Executive to become a member of the AAG Council with the privilege of full voting rights.
The second motion was for the approval of the West End Athletics Club, Region Nine Athletics Club and Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School Athletics Club, as full members of the AAG; both motions were successfully passed at Sunday’s AGM.
In his evaluation of his first term as AAG President, Aubrey Hutson described 2013 as “good but not great”. Hutson said that the transition of the association included restructuring with the view of establishing better communication among Executive members.
“The (AAG) Council, over the past year, has been restructured. We have implemented new ways and methods of getting things done. The need to innovate in order to better adapt to the demands of the world led us to implement a more interactive strategy,” he said.
“To my mind this will ensure that those who have elected us can contribute more and we will get a chance to establish genuine dialogue among members of the athletics family, with the view of generating new ideas for more efficient management,” Hutson added.
Continuing in his address, Hutson informed that the AAG and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will be tackling the issue of anti-doping this year. His indication was direct consequence of the Gumendra Shewdas issue and a need for athletes’ education.
“In our quest to do better in track and field, we must do it free of doping. I am thankful that thus far, none of our athletes has tested positive for using banned substances, but in order to keep our record clean, this Council, in collaboration with GOA, will strengthen its educational and testing plans in 2014,” He noted.
Hutson also informed that a half marathon is set for March and commended AAG Vice-President Gavin Hope for ensuring that representative teams procure necessary sponsorship for competing overseas. He said athletes were fully-sponsored last year.
“Our Vice-President has hit the ground running this year; he has already secured sponsorship for a half marathon in March and other events in 2014,” he said, adding that all representative teams competed internationally last year “without anyone needing to go cap-in-hand begging”.
General Secretary of the association, Colonel Paul Arthur also reported a successful year in 2013 despite many “challenges”. He said that the association worked hard and was determined, noting the CARIFTA Games success where Guyana bagged six medals. (Edison Jefford)
