Four days of intense application in the intricacies of the trade came to a successful conclusion for 13 local amateur referees and judges when the curtains came down on the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) referees/judges seminar at the Olympic House, High Street Kingston yesterday morning.
Activities commenced on Thursday morning last and sessions were facilitated by International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) official, James Beckles, who conducted practical and theoretical sessions at the Forgotten Youth Foundation Boxing Gym and the Olympic House respectively, of the trade with particular emphasis on the intricate computer scoring system.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar, was credited for his strenuous efforts in making the initiative possible and was invited to deliver keynote remarks. He noted the vast improvements in the sport and attributed it to the hard work of President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle. He also extended deep appreciation to Mr Beckles for taking time out from his busy schedule to impart valuable knowledge to the local officials.
The Director of Youth and Sports further complimented the coverage provided by the local media agents and challenged them to further extend the contents of the course to the sporting public so that it is acquainted with the intricacies of the complicated computer scoring system. He said that Government is indeed committed to the development of local pugilists, demonstrated by the large input into the sport over the years. Mr Kumar further said that Government has recently purchased a new boxing ring and gears which will be officially handed over to GBA President sometime this week.
“This year must be one of dedication and hard work with the primary objective of winning the Olympic gold medal,” he implored the officials.
Mr Ninvalle also extended gratitude to Mr Beckles and said that his input was certainly an asset to the development of his officials, “Boxing has scored a knockout today,” he said.
In all, three female officials, Paulette Nurse (level 2), Nicola Yhap (level one) and Dwon Thompson (level one), participated in the programme and the GBA president singled them out for special commendations. He said that it was indeed refreshing to see the females taking up the mantle and urged them to remain committed to the task.
The GBA President further disclosed that he has commenced negotiations with sports officials in Cuba in a bid to resuscitate the exchange programmes of the late seventies. “My executive is doing all in its power to create opportunities for our boxers in their bid to break the Olympic gold medal jinx,” pronounced Mr Ninvalle. He said that his secretary is currently preparing the requisite correspondence to commence the process. He ended by beseeching the officials to apply their newly acquired knowledge in their quest to better the sport.
Mr Beckles was enthused by the outpourings of gratitude and acknowledged that working with the local officials has always been a delightful experience for him. He observed that the participants were truly challenged with the new computerized method of tallying points but noted that they were able to eventually adjust to the new system. The AIBA official also noted the high level of camaraderie demonstrated by the officials and said that this trait augured well for the future of the sport and encouraged them to collaborate toward their continued advancement.
Meanwhile, each of the participating officials received certificates while they in turn presented a similar accolade to Mr Beckles. He in turn presented Mr Ninvalle with a special gift. Terrence Poole and Romona Agard’s administrative input were also acknowledged with similar accolades. Secretary (GBA), Shawn Richmond, chaired the proceedings while one of the officials, Elton Chase delivered a stirring vote of thanks. The other participating officials are Menard Wilson, Wayne Harris (level one), Eustace Cuffy, Colin Waddle and Marcelle Daniels (level two).
