The body of yet another gold miner was pulled from the rubbles of a collapsed mining pit in which he was working last Thursday at Marudi, Region Nine.
The body which was identified as that of Rohno Rogers, 36, of 265 Freeman Street, La Penitence, was dug out from the mining pit a few hours after one of the walls came crashing down.
Rogers was at the time working with another man, who immediately summoned help after observing the accident.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the man was operating a smaller mining pit to the one in which he was killed but was forced out by some Brazilian miners.
According o a source in the area, Rogers was forced to relocate to a larger, more treacherous pit.
“Dese Brazilian miners get more rights than we. Dat man de wukkin good, good and dey force he out,” the source stated.
Rogers’ body was flown to the city yesterday and is presently lying at the Lyken Funeral Home.
The Marudi mining district was the source of much controversy last year with local miners complaining that they were being discriminated against by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission in favour of a large mining concern.
This led to the intervention of Natural Resource Minister Robert Persaud who implemented a lottery system to allocate mining lands in an equitable manner.
But according to local miners the area has been taken over by Brazilians, many of whom are illegally in Guyana and nothing is being done about it.
