A 38-year-old cop attached to Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, is currently nursing a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen in the Male Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after an unsuspecting attack by two armed bandits.
Police Constable 14716, Kirk Profitt, of Lot ‘K’ Bent Street, Wortmanville related to Kaieteur News that the incident occurred yesterday morning at about 05:30 hrs after he had dropped his girlfriend off at a Princes Street location and was heading back home. The unknown assailants relieved him of a cellular phone and $10,000.
Profitt suggested that they were probably following him just before they pounced. “Was two of them, one had a gun and the other one had a knife. I hold down the one with the knife and the other one shoot me,” Profitt said from his hospital bed.
According to a relative, immediately after the attack, while the bandits made good their escape, someone in the neighbourhood alerted the hospital which responded promptly. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene and Profitt was transported to the health facility where he was treated and then warded.
Meanwhile, police in a press statement, said that at about 05:35 hrs yesterday, the Police constable was attacked by two men, one of whom was armed with a hand gun, while he was walking along Bent Street, Georgetown.
The statement said that the perpetrators took away his wallet along with $10,000 and his cell phone. They then observed his Police Badge in the wallet and shot him to his abdomen before escaping on bicycles.
Investigations are ongoing.
