With the absence of a proper functioning Basketball body in Berbice and the coming to being of the new Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) executive, it is hoped that Basketball will be conducted on a better and more organized scale in the Ancient County for 2014 as was indicated by the President Nigel Hinds.
However Basketball action is set to bounce off in Berbice today with the Inaugural Annamaya Memorial Interclub Basketball competition for teams in Berbice organized by Sports enthusiast Vibert Garrett.
Six teams are down to participate in the competition namely – New Amsterdam Warriors, Smythfield Rockers, East Canje Knights, Fyrish Black Sharks, Rose Hall Town Jammers and Home Line Basketball Club. The teams have been divided into two groups with, Fyrish Black Sharks, Rose Hall Town Jammers and Home Line Basketball Club in group A, while Group B is made up of New Amsterdam Warriors, Smythfield Rockers and East Canje Knights.
The competition will tip off with Rose Hall Town Jammers playing Fyrish Black Sharks at the Port Mourant Training School court.
The rest of the fixtures read: New Amsterdam Rockers verses East Canje Knights on Sunday 26th January at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball court. February 2nd will see Home Line taking on Fyrish Black Sharks at Fyrish, on February 5th, Jammers will match skills with Home line at Rose Hall, February 9th will be the game between New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers at Vryman’s Erven, while the final preliminary game will take place on the 12th of February with the Knights battling Warriors at the Vryman’s Erven court.
The semifinals will be played over two days with the winner of group A taking on the runner up of group B on 16 at Rose Hall, while the second semifinal will see the winner of group B and the runner up of group A clashing on February 19th at Vryman’s Erven.
The winners will clash in the finals on February 23rd at the Rose Hall Basketball court. All matches will begin at 16:00 hrs.
At stake in the competition will be cash incentives and trophies for the top teams and outstanding individual players. (Samuel Whyte)
