Trio refused bail on felony-related charges, illegal firearm

On Wednesday, three youths were brought before Magistrate Judy Latchman who later ordered them held on account of the separate charges which were read to them. The common charge amongst them was that of Waiting on an Opportunity to Commit a Felony, whilst one for Possession of Firearm without Licence was read to the 16-year-old in the ‘crew’ and another.
The teenager who resides in East LaPenitence, Kenny Jones and Jafari King on Wednesday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where they were read a summary charge for Waiting on an Opportunity to Commit a Felony. The charge detailed that on January 11, at Camp Street, Georgetown, a public place, they were waiting for an opportunity to commit a felony, punishable upon indictment, that is to say Robbery Under Arms.
Additionally, the 16-year-old also faced another charge. It was alleged that at the same date and place, he and Jones had in their possession a .32 Taurus semiautomatic pistol whilst they were not the holders of a firearm licence at the time.
Despite the Prosecution’s claims, the trio pleaded not guilty when Magistrate Latchman respectively read the charges to them.
The Prosecution team led by Sergeant Vishnu Hunt had relayed the facts of the matter. The police were on patrol duties that day when they allegedly unearthed the crimes.
He said that they saw the 16-year-old and King on Camp Street, acting in what was described as a suspicious manner. They were searched and the .32 pistol was found in the 16-year-old’s crotch.
Hunt related that they were both arrested and questioned. The interrogations allegedly led to the 16-year-old admitting that he was given the gun by Jones who was at that time in a yellow taxi waiting on Camp Street while he and King were searching for persons for them to rob.
Jones was subsequently apprehended, but denied the allegations when they were put to him. King however supported the 16-year-old’s story and further added that he saw when Jones handed over the gun to the teenager and told him to ‘drag’ Camp Street which he claimed meant to rob people.
Subsequent investigations were conducted, hence the respective charges were instituted against them. The Magistrate refused bail to the trio and the matter was adjourned to January 24.
