Drayton is top junior player
Reigning national senior chess champion, Wendell Meusa shrugged aside an early defeat at the hands of former national champion, Kriskal Persaud, to eventually register 6 points and take top honours in the senior category when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged the Trophy Stall one-day rapid chess tournament at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, Sunday January 12 last.
Former junior champion, Anthony Drayton surrendered a game to Ron Mootilall and drew another with Kriskal Persaud but still managed to secure the top spot among the juniors after amassing 5 ½ points.
Kriskal Persaud clinched the second place spot among the seniors, while Hemraj Sanichar closed off the podium spots. Alexander Duncan finished fourth while Glenford Corlette ended at fifth place.
Omar Britton Grant secured the second place spot among the juniors while Ron Motilall sealed off the final podium spot. Saeed Ali, Davion Mars and Carlos Petterson occupied the 5th-6th positions respectively. Othneil Lewis of Queens College was adjudged he best U-16 player.
Meanwhile, the win is somewhat memorable for Drayton since he will now be rendered ineligible to participate at the level; he would have surpassed the stipulated age limit when the next junior tournament is contested.
The final scores of the other seniors read: Kriskal Persaud (5 ½), Hemraj Sanichar (5), Alexander Duncan (4 ½) and Glenford Corlette (4).
Final scores of the top junior players read: Omar Britton Grant, Ron Motilall, Saeed Ali and Davion Mars four apiece (4 apiece), Carlos Petterson (3 ½) and Othneil Lewis (2).
The prizes were presented by Trophy Stall representative, Renuka Chattergoon.
