Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar is especially impressed and enthused by the efforts of local amateur boxing administrators in their bid to develop the sport and he expressed these sentiments when executives of the Guyana Boxing Association raised the curtains on a 5 days referees/judges seminar at the Olympic House, High Street Kingston, yesterday morning.
Mr Kumar delivered brief remarks and heartily congratulated

GBA President, Steve Ninvalle on his continued efforts to improve on the fortunes of local pugilists. He pointed out that the GBA President was among the only two officials that have submitted a four year plan for the sport as requested by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony. Mr Kumar then urged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunities and then convert their newly acquired knowledge to practical sessions in and around the ring.
Mr Ninvalle urged the training group to be like sponges, soaking up all the knowledge and information that they possibly can. He admitted that there are areas in the officiating field that need to be harnessed to dispel the many outcries by the supporters. He also said that the primary objective of the course is to broaden the knowledge base of the officials in order to minimise such uttering’s and generally improve the quality of the local officials.
Mr Beckles said that he was delighted to be back in Guyana to work with the officials. He said that his schedule has been tight but he could not necessarily pass up the offer to once again work with the officials. Mr Beckles also informed that Trinidad and Tobago will soon be hosting their national championships and plans are in train to invite all of the other Presidents of territorial associations to witness the action but more importantly, compare administrative notes and organizing techniques.
Fourteen referees and judges started the course and Mr Ninvalle said that this number will increase since some of the officials had to first seek permission from their respective jobs to participate in the course.
Theoretical aspects of the course will be conducted at Olympic House and will focus heavily on mastering the computer scoring system. The group moves over to the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym tomorrow and Sunday morning to engage in practical sessions.
