Weeks of diligent training will dwindle to naught for several boxers preparing for fistic duties in the 31st edition of Guyana Fight Night boxing card, dubbed ‘Berbice Showdown,’ and scheduled to have been staged at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Sunday January 26 next, after organizers of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) encountered the aged old sponsorship difficulties and opted to cancel the card.
Referee and matchmaker, Eon Jardine, confirmed this with the Kaieteur News in a telephone interview yesterday afternoon. He said that the organizers were desperately battling to stage the bout but failed after receiving negative responses from several corporate entities. Organizers are now evaluating, in order to assess the situation and possibly arrive at a tangible solution to the issue.
Dereck Richmond was scheduled to clash with former European and National Middleweight champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in a non-title super/middleweight affair, while Kelsey George and Gladwin Dorway were to have fought in a 6 rounds middleweight showdown in the main supporting bout.
The other fights to have comprised the card are Jnr/lightweight David Thomas against Richard Williamson over 4 rounds and Cassius Matthews up against Laured Stewart in another 4 rounds welterweight shindig.
