A school girl lost her life yesterday morning when she was struck down by a speeding minibus on the Bloomfield, Corentyne, Public Road. The incident occurred shortly after 11:00hrs.
According to reports, the child Saleena ‘Marissa’ Anthony, 10, of 383 Bloomfield Village and a student of the Auchlyne Primary School was cycling while on an errand to the shop when she was hit by the speeding minibus BRR6403, driven by its 40-year-old owner of No 59 Village Corentyne, Berbice.
According to an eyewitness the bus was proceeding at a fast rate of speed towards New Amsterdam. The driver alleged that the child who was riding a bicycle rode out from an access street into his path. He applied brakes and tried to swerve out of her way, but the left side of the bus stuck her.
The child, who it is understood sustained major head injuries, was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant hospital where she died while receiving treatment.
The child’s mother, Monica ‘Julie’ Anthony, stated that she was informed of the accident by a neighbour. She immediately abandoned her chores and hurried to the location where her daughter had been struck. By that time, however, the child had already been taken to the hospital. The mother then hurried to the hospital, but was not allowed to see her daughter. She was subsequently informed that her child had died.
Saleena Anthony leaves to mourn her parents and five siblings.
The minibus driver is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Anthony’s death is the second such fatality in Berbice for the year, with both accidents involving minibuses.
