The National Assembly will tomorrow convene its first sitting for 2014 and among the matters up for discussion would be the Bills that were rejected by the majority since they had originally been tabled by Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.
The Bills, Summary Jurisdiction (Procedure) (Amendment) Bill and the Evidence (Amendment) Bill Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2013, were recently reintroduced by Attorney General Anil Nandlall.
The Opposition had previously rejected the Bills, given that they were first presented by Rohee and that a motion of no-confidence was passed against him to perform the duties as Minister of Home Affairs.
The Firearms Amendment Bill seeks to create a new criminal offence namely the possession of any part of a weapon. The current law only allows for the criminalizing of a complete intact weapon.
At the time of its rejection, Opposition Leader David Granger sought to justify the vote by saying that “the greater danger must be recognized”. The greater danger referred to was Rohee’s continuing to function in his current capacity as the Minister of Home Affairs.
Granger told the media that Rohee’s presence at the Ministry of Home Affairs is weakening law enforcement and the fight for public security. Granger further affirmed “he must leave Home Affairs, let him go to Tourism.”
Granger had maintained that “We have taken a position that he (Rohee) is not competent to remain Minister of Home Affairs and we take responsibility for that position. His remaining in that position is the greatest danger to public security.”
During its most recent press engagement the Opposition leader hinted at voting favourably for the pieces of legislation, given that it had been tabled by a different Minister.
