Police are on the hunt for burglars, who some time during Monday evening broke and entered the popular Lim Kang Chinese restaurant located at Shoe Lane and Main Street, New Amsterdam, and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and other valuables including a laptop, GT&T and Digicel phone cards, cooking utensils, cigarettes and copper, among other items.
Information revealed that the thieves used the cover of heavy rainfall to carry out the act. It is alleged that the perpetrators used some tables that are used by vendors to sell at the road corners to scale the 10-ft. claybrick fence. They then cut through the thick coils of barbed wire on top of the fence before entering the yard.
The intruders then broke into the lower flat of the building before they made their way to the restaurant and carried out the act.
According to information, the owner, whose name was given as ‘Kang’, stated that he was in the upper flat of the two-storey building with the rest of the family when he was aroused by a strange noise coming from the lower flat around 03:00hrs. He said at the time it was raining heavily and he immediately called the police. The lawmen responded promptly but by the time they got there the burglars had escaped.
Investigators found two cutlasses in the kitchen of the restaurant while a trail of cigarettes was also found.
There has been no arrest and investigations are continuing.
