Delta Force withstood stiff challenges from their rivals to win the Cuffy 250 Dominoes tournament when the final was contested last Sunday night at HBTV Channel 9 compound.
In one of the most closely fought final in recent times, Delta Force chalked up 74 games to edge runner-up Arsenal with 69 and Pacesetters, who ended third with 66.
Errol Abrigo, who copped the most valuable player award in the final, top scored for the winners with 17 games, while Frankie Harris supported with 15. Gary Johnson and Roderick Harry marked 17 apiece for Arsenal; Colin Thomas and Derick Osborne made 15 each for Pacesetters.
Delta Force took home a trophy and $150,000, Arsenal collected a trophy and $75,000, while Pacesetters received a trophy and $35,000; Abrigo was given a trophy and $5,000 for his efforts. Outsiders of New York grabbed $10,000 for finishing fourth.
The competition was sponsored by the United States Dominoes Federation (USDF) and organized by the Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA) to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of 1763 Berbice slave rebellion leader Cuffy.
Speaking at presentation ceremony, President of the USDF, George Abrams, thanked the teams for participating and commended the players for their discipline. He said that Dominoes has become a cultural event and the future of the sport in Guyana looks bright. Public Relations Officer of the GDA, Basil Bradshaw, congratulated the winning team and thanked the sponsors USDF and Channel 9 for facilitating the final. He said that plans are in the making to run off another tournament in 2015.
