Following a hectic year where they had been able to run off dozens of tournaments including the National Junior and Senior Championships, officials of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will commence another year of activities with a one-day rapid tournament, sponsored by Trophy Stall, at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown Sunday January 12 next.
The tournament will attract the nation’s best players and as always, fans will look forward to the keen contests between Haifen Su, Anthony Drayton, Wendell Meusa, Taffin Khan and Errol Tiwari among others.
Managing Director of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich, has once again acquiesced to a lucrative sponsorship deal and has promised to support at least two of the tournaments for the year and yesterday afternoon presented the chess President with the requisite funds.
“Chess has been enjoying remarkable successes and I am indeed delighted to render support to its sustenance,” exhorted the Trophy Stall boss.
He further said that he is impressed with the strides made by officials of the GCF and called on support from the Government and business community. “Chess is not only a game but it sharpens one’s knowledge (of aspects) of life,” he concluded.
Mr. Nandalall thanked the business proprietor for his commitment while noting that the arrangement spanned three years. He also called on other members of the corporate community to emulate the act. “Chess is a rising sport but our work couyld be reduced to naught devoid of support from the business community,” said Mr. Nandalall.
Meanwhile, the tournament will be contested over seven rounds and trophies, medals and cash prizes will be at stake. Special prizes would also be awarded to the best beginner (Under-13 years old), best Under-16 and the best female players.
Registration commences at 09:00hrs at the venue and the tournament starts half hour later. The fee for is $500 and $300 for senior and junior non-members respectively. Players are also reminded to renew their membership with the GCF for 2014 as early as possible and enjoy a reduced cost.
Further, members will be eligible for participation in overseas tournaments as well as voting rights at election of office bearers scheduled for Sunday February 2, 2014. The annual membership fee is $2,000 and $1,000 for senior and juniors players respectively.
