Child Care officers have confirmed that a six-week-old baby girl, who had been abandoned by her 19-year-old mother just a day after giving birth at the Georgetown Public Hospital, has been adopted.
According to reports, ever since the mother’s desertion, the child had been taken under the wings of nurses at the hospital’s Maternity Unit. The combined efforts of the nursing staff gave the baby the love and care she required at that time and she was considered family. Her stay at the hospital ended yesterday, however, after she was handed over to her adoptive parents.
According to the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA), the course of action was based on a clear decision made by the mother of the child.
Kaieteur News was told that prior to giving birth in late November, the young mother had made it pellucidly clear that she would not be taking the child home since she was already experiencing financial strains in caring for her first child who is two years old. According to a CCPA official, a visit to her home has revealed that the family is “clearly living in poverty.”
She said that the young mother is unemployed and is currently being aided by her mother in caring for the two-year-old.
The official added that the suggestion was put forward to her to have a relative take responsibility for the child but it was dismissed. The young woman reportedly decided that it was best for the child to go to a “stranger”.
The mother of the young woman appears to share the same view as her daughter since she, too, has told welfare officers that she thinks the child should be adopted; resulting in the ultimate course of action taken by the CCPA.
Additionally, the Agency has directed the 19-year-old to the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CR&MA) to assist her in finding employment.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News spoke to Director of Nursing Services, Matron Audrey Corry, who noted that instances where newborn babies are abandoned by their mothers are very rare; so much so that there has been no such occurrence during 2013. She said that newborn babies are normally carried home.
At the same time, she noted that the presence of agencies such as the CCPA is very assuring as they specialise in offering help under these circumstances.
