The recent decision by Muri Brasil Ventures Incorporated to no longer pursue exploration activities in the New River Triangle area under the Permission for Geographical and Geophysical Surveys (PGGS) has caused Cabinet to be concerned with the possibility of future investors losing confidence in Guyana.
This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon at a press conference yesterday held at the Office of the President.
The company, through a public notification had indicated last week that although the process was legal and transparent, their “decision is due to the misinformation, prejudice and hostility to this proposed survey by persons and agencies which are fostering an adverse investment climate in Guyana.”
Luncheon told members of the media corps yesterday that Cabinet had examined the decision made in the natural resources sector by the said investor, and, “the similarities in the way in which this project was addressed by the Opposition and sections of the media with that of the Amaila falls Hydro project were readily recognized by Cabinet. Once again, the outcome in this case is regrettable. Cabinet went beyond the specifics of the unfortunate episode and was addressing its deeply rooted ominous concerns of the likely loss of investors’ confidence in Guyana combined with the concurrent parliamentary position of the opposition.”
Luncheon further stressed that, “the ideal situation for Guyana is for the Opposition to stop playing politics with projects for economic development.”
Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh had recently blamed the Opposition Collation, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) as well as the Alliance For Change (AFC) for the decision made by the company.
