Residents of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara were repulsively greeted with the sight of worm-infested water coming out of their taps on Tuesday afternoon.
According to one woman, she was about to prepare dinner for her family, but was stopped in her tracks after noticing that the water had too many “crumbs”.
The mother of three said that she then realized that the particles were actually moving, and upon closer inspection, realized that they were worms.
“I couldn’t believe it. That’s nasty, especially because we does drink pipe water when I ain’t get money. Right now I broke, but we got to go and buy Chinese food for dinner,” the woman told Kaieteur News.
Another resident said that he had already put the water to his mouth when he saw the worms.
“GWI (Guyana Water Incorporated) need to check on these things regularly, because they gah realize that poor people like me self does actually drink this water,” the man stressed.
He added that an official complaint will be made.
Meanwhile, another resident who identified herself as Cecilia Anderson told this newspaper that she has been living in the Bagotstown/ Eccles area for over 30 years, and that a similar incident had occurred once before when an underground pipe was punctured.
“…But that was years ago, and they didn’t take too long to fix it,” she added.
Residents are calling on the Guyana Water Incorporated to inspect and fix the problem, stressing that water is an essential part of life.
