In sweltering heat at the Everest ground Shiv Chanderpaul’s X1 beat Chris Barnwell’s X1 by six wickets in the first practice match for the National cricket team which is preparing for this year’s Regional Super50 tournament slated for Trinidad & Tobago.
Barnwell led from the front with an attractive 54 but got no batting support as his team was restricted to 149-8 when their 45 overs expired on a track with variable bounce and a very heavy outfield.
Off-spinner Royston Crandon took 3-28 from nine overs for Chanderpaul’s X1 who responded with 150-4 in 41.3 overs, Leon Johnson spearheaded the run chase with an elegant unbeaten 58.
The 27 year-old Barnwell, with two half-centuries from 17 List ‘A’ matches to his name accelerated from a pedestrian-paced run scoring by the top order and his half-century was decorated with four fours and three sixes.
But only opener Robin Bacchus of the other batsmen reached double figures with 16 although Extras made a healthy 27.
Barnwell, who played six T20 Internationals for the West Indies shared in useful partnerships with Vishal Singh with whom he added 43 for the seventh wicket and Chanderpaul Hemraj with whom he put together 32 for the fifth.
This was after Trevon Griffith, who was run out for one, Tagenarine Chanderpaul (6), Bacchus and Ramnaresh Sarwan, who pulled an innocuous short ball from Crandon to deep mid-wicket, all fell cheaply.
Barnwell then tried to repair the damage with his robust innings but a total of less than 150 was always going to be difficult defending even on a ground which made scoring boundaries a struggle.
But the 26-year-old Johnson who has a half-century in his three ODIs, played an array of elegant shots in a slight drizzle, hitting two fours and a six, adding 60 with Crandon (25) for the third wicket before Crandon departed.
Test left-hander Assad Fudadin also chipped in with 24 before Skipper Chanderpaul was soon caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Hemraj (2-35) for six as Chanderpaul’s X1 slipped to 119-4. But the stylish Johnson ensured his team reached their target with 3.3 overs to be bowled.
