Patrick Ram, 20, a minibus driver of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, Berbice yesterday appeared before Magistrate Rabindranath Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving and was placed on $300,000 bail.
The victim is Andre Phillips, 43, a labourer of Lot 448 Number 77 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. According to information, Phillips was a passenger in a minibus BKK 6944 which was driven by Ram.
Phillips reportedly disembarked the bus around 16:40hrs, at the Number 53 Village Public Road.
Reports are that he was standing behind the bus waiting to cross when the bus moved off, before the driver stopped suddenly and reversed rapidly. The vehicle reportedly struck Phillips down and ran over him. The driver then stopped and drove forward, running over the man a second time.
Phillips was rushed to the Springlands hospital where he died around 18:30hrs from his injuries even as preparations were being made to transfer him to the New Amsterdam hospital.
A post mortem examination was conducted yesterday by Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan at the Skeldon Hospital which gave the cause of death as multiple injuries due to vehicular accident.
Meanwhile, Ram will have to return to court on Wednesday, February 5. His passport has also been lodged.
Andre Phillips is survived by his wife, three children, five siblings and three grandchildren.
Police are continuing their investigations.
