West side vs GT as 8-team finals kick off on Sunday
With the hype for Football sky high on the West side following the 3-2 win by West Demerara side Slingerz over Santos in
the Final of the Banks Beer Cup at the Guyana National Stadium on New Year’s day, the Football fever has reached a crescendo.
Not surprisingly, for the first time ever, four West Demerara teams have qualified for the eight-team finals of the Mayor’s Cup Inter Ward/Village 7-a side Knock-out Football competition.
City Mayor Hamilton Green celebrated his 79th birthday last November and all roads should lead to the Den Amstel Community Centre ground in West Demerara on Sunday and a large crowd should be on hand to witness what should be a pulsating day of Football as the action climaxes with four games before the semi-finals and Final.
The champion team will take home $100,000, while the Runner-up receives $50,000. Sara Lodge face-off with North Sophia in the opening 20-minute game from 14:00hrs before Pouderoyen come up against North/East Lapenitence from 14:30hrs.
Uitvlugt battle South Sophia from 15:00hrs, while Den Amstel take on Kitty from 15:30hrs.
The two semi-finals will be played at 16:00hrs and 16:30hrs with the grand finale slated to commence at 17:00hrs. Among some of the key players representing the various teams are: Jamal Harvey, Jeffery Pereira, Devon Millington and Josh Kamal among others.
Former National Coach Lennox Arthur is the Coordinator of the competition which began last year and he thanked Macorp, GT&T, Guyana Lotteries, Chris Fernandes, Giftland Office Max, James Bovell of City College, Mark Bender Jermaine Langevine and Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, which will provide the winner’s trophy.
