Richmond puts super/middleweight belt on line against Eastman
When Dereck Richmond stopped Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) middleweight champion, Edmond DeClou early
last year and sent him to the hospital nursing a broken jaw, the pundits dismissed the feat as a fluke. Unperturbed, Richmond continued to address his training schedule and one fight later, on December 26 last, almost decapitated James ‘Sack’ Walcott with a similar punch when they faced off at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground for the local super/middleweight belt.
The bout has boosted Richmond’s rating as a knockout artist and the pundits are only now beginning to take him seriously. Consequently, the young pugilist has grown in confidence and is set to go one step further when he tackles former European and Guyana middleweight boxing champion, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman in defence of his newly acquired accolade when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control stages the 31st edition of Guyana Fight Night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Sunday January 26 next in a card dubbed ‘Berbice Showdown.’
The main supporting bout will see Kelsie George matching gloves with Gladwin Dorway in a 6 rounds middleweight showdown and George, who has shown great improvement in his last outing against Romeo Norville, whom he battled to a draw, will feel that he has the tools to conquer Dorway. This might be so but the latter boxer is no slouch and will also be nurturing ambitions of reinstating himself on the local scene after his lopsided loss to Mark Austin last April.
Junior/lightweight boxer, Richard Williamson will also be in action and tackles David Thomas in a 4 rounds jnr/lightweight affair while Cassius Matthews, fresh from his points win over Kishawn Simon, clashes with young and upcoming pugilist, Lared Stewart, in a 4 rounds welterweight affair.
As usual, four amateur bouts will comprise a part of the card but the organizers are still to be furnished with those names
which are expected to be announced when administrators of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) convene sometime this week. Further, the professional boxers will be signing their respective contracts soon.
